Quora- How big is manga market?
by Erica F

"Once again, we'll start with a reminder that the anime market and the manga market are not the same thing, nor can they be measured similarly.

The manga market in the United States is still relatively small and has undergone a number of massive shifts in even the last 5 years. That said, there has been net growth in the last few years.

From: Domestic Manga Market Grew To $85 Million Last Year According To Estimate from October 2016:

This week, Comic Book Resources published their report on the ICv2 Conference at New York Comic Con. The look at the domestic comic market was presented by an industry site tied to Diamond, the distributor who is the primary supplier of books to specialty comic shops. According to ICv2's Milton Griepp, the valued of the American comics market has topped $1 billion. He estimated the size of the manga market at $85 million last year, up 13% from the year before.

That makes three consecutive years of increased sales. "Last year the biggest new titles were Tokyo Ghoul and One-Punch Man from Viz, but lots of titles are doing well and overall the market is growing," he said.

Milton Griepp's figures are the best we have in terms of overall sales, so $85 million it is.

Anime is a whole different animal. The last year I can even find an estimate for the United States is 2009, when the market was estimated at $2.741 billion. But that was before streaming changed the landscape completely. America's 2009 Anime Market Pegged at US$2.741 Billion

Most Anime and manga companies are small and privately owned. Streaming/digital/online sales numbers are rarely released. Justin Sevakis explains this cogently here: Answerman - Why Aren't Anime/Manga Sales Numbers Public?

Manga companies are increasingly being partnered with or portions purchased by large publishing zaibatsu which, to be very honest, I think is a good thing. When a small, private publishing company is stringing along in manga, their margins are ridiculously tight and they are the mercy of distributors who do not care about them. Partnered with Hachette or Random House, they have much better distribution and promotion. Invested in by the Japanese publishers, they have better contacts and licensing opportunities.

Anime companies, however, don't want to partner with the big media companies, even if Sony or Warner Brothers or Fox would care to have them. Partnering with those companies would be a slow painful death, as many an indie studio has learned. So you're not going to get figures.

I've linked to it three times here, but for all the news about the anime industry, I suggest Anime News Network. If there are numbers for a year, they will report it."
