"I really needed to create something of my own!"

Hermann Huppen, born in Belgium in 1938, is definitely one of the best and most influential artists of the European adventure comics. Among the numerous highlights in his very successful and fruitful career are his bestselling series "Bernard Prince" and "Comanche" (which he created with the writer Greg), as well as his own middle-age series "The Towers of Bois-Maury," all of which left their strong mark on the history of European comics.

It was in 1978 that Hermann first brought to life his own ideas and stories in his new series "Jeremiah." At that point, he had devoted twelve years solely as an artist to his profession. But to make the time needed for "Jeremiah," he had to give up his work as an artist of "Bernard Prince," the series he started with Greg in 1966.

During his successful collaboration with Greg for more than a decade, many things in their relationship changed. So it was in the mid-seventies when Hermann first started to think about his own writing. Although Greg was always very supportive of his work, Hermann's growing desire to create his own series left him feeling restless. He now remembers those days: "I really needed to create something of my own at that time, in order to convince myself that I can write my own scripts. Besides, I was a little tired of working on Greg's scripts, especially since he was losing motivation. At that time Greg became a big star, was in huge demand, and was doing a lot more than he could possibly handle." In his last "Comanche" album Hermann even used his own brand of humor to express how much he was tired of working on Greg's scripts. He included in his drawings things which didn't exist in the Wild West period, such as telephone and a Toyota sign.

So, it seemed that it was the perfect timing for Hermann to start a new series, because the German weekly comics magazine Zack was looking for fresh material. Zack was launced in 1972, and in the first issue, which published 450,000 copies, it included Hermann & Greg's series "Bernard Prince," which was renamed "Andy Morgan" for the German publication only. And, since Hermann was one of the favorite artists of the magazine's editor Gigi Spina, it was no surprise that the first installment of "Jeremiah" - shortly after it was drawn - appeared in the September 21, 1978 issue of Zack. This series was also published under a different title for the German edition only: "David Walker." Years later, when SAF made a contract with Carlsen Verlag to publish the series in Germany again, starting with the first volume, it was then published as "Jeremiah."

Koralle Verlag, the publisher of Zack (a company owned by the German publishing conglomerate Axel Springer AG in Hamburg), was so successful with Zack in those days that the appearance of the French and Dutch versions of that magazine was inevitable. The French weekly was called Super AS, while the Dutch version had a sound effect title: WHAM! Consequently, both magazines also published "Jeremiah," starting with the first story in 1979.

About the same time Ervin Rustemagic, who had just returned from his army service, was doing final preparations to re-launch his comics magazine Strip Art, which he successfully published in Sarajevo before. The old edition was distributed in the territory of ex-Yugoslavia from 1971-1974. The second issue of the new version of Strip Art, which came out in July 1979 and consisted of 100 pages, published the complete first episode of "Jeremiah." The next complete episode appeared in the 8th issue, which came out in January 1980, and was followed by the third episode in the March issue of Strip Art No. 10.

For six more years Strip Art was one of the rare magazine in Europe that regularly published new episodes of "Jeremiah," since Zack, Super AS and WHAM! had all been discontinued due to readers' growing disinterest in buying comics magazines. This situation was unintentionally created by the publishers themselves, because they were putting out albums (the European expression for graphic novels) on the market soon after the publication of the same episode in the magazine, thus killing their own periodical publications.

Early 1970s comics magazines like Tintin, Spirou, Pilote, Eppo, and many others, used to publish comics as soon as they were created by their various artists, thus attracting readers who were fans of those artists, and eager to see what their idols were currently doing. Then, in most cases, an album would be published within two years after the episode appeared in a magazine, and would be bought by fans for their album collection. But soon comics magazines were not bringing the same profits to the publishers, who were barely breaking-even with the magazine due to high page rates they were paying to their artists and writers. That's when they all realized that albums were the only source of income. So they all started shortening the period of time between when the comic first appeared in a magazine and the date of the album publication. Some publishers started bringing out albums only a few months after the publication of the same episode in their comics magazine, while some even published an album at the same time the last installment of the same episode came out in the magazine.

This was how publishers diverted readers from buying their magazines. Because, if you are a fan of two or three comic titles in a comics magazine - out of 8 or 12 titles which they normally published - why should you buy a magazine every week or month, when albums with the comics you love will be published shortly after their appearance in these magazines? So, since they only had to wait a few weeks (or sometimes only a few days) to buy an album, fans no longer cared for magazines. We can now freely say that the publishers' greed, or their reasonable accounting - if you like - was the main reason for the death of many comics magazines in Europe.

However, since the magazines were also promotional tools for these albums, album sales rapidly declined as the years passed by. But this was not the only reason for poor sales. The overproduction of albums, which no market could swallow, as well as some other elements - like new media - should be taken into account as well.

Throughout the years Ervin's SAF (Strip Art Features) managed to sell "Jeremiah" to many publishers all over the world, so that the series appeared in 24 languages. In addition to the major languages, such as English, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, "Jeremiah" was also published in Polish, Czech, Slovenian, Basque and others.

Jeremiah oykuleri birbirinden bagimsiz, isteyen sadece ikinci ya da ucuncu cildi de okuyabilir; hikayenin gectigi dunyayi bilmek yeterli. Jeremiah "western" macera hikayeleri anlatiyor, ancak yasadiklari dunya icsavas sonrasi, yikilmis bir gelecegi ele aliyor. Bu yuzden "modern dunya"dan kalan parcalar da (motosikletler, cam binalar, vs.) Vahsi Bati'da karsimiza cikabiliyor.

Ilk oykude Jeremiah ile dizideki ekurisi Kurdy'nin tanismasina ve birlikte yollara dusmesine sahit oluyoruz. Jeremiah, duzgun, dogrucu, biraz naif bir karakter iken (kapaklardaki sarisin arkadas), Kurdy bunun kurnaz, elini kirletmekten yahut silahini ateslemekten korkmayan, "survivor" arkadasi (kafasinda kask olan tip).
